Kamarpukur : The birthplace of Ramakrishna

Kamarpukur is a village situated in the Arambag subdivision of the Hooghly District in West Bengal state of India. It is famous for being the birthplace of Ramakrishna.

The signs of ancient prosperity are still visible everywhere at Kamarpukur. A number of ponds, tanks and old buildings and dilapidated temples still bear witness to its old glory. In olden days Kamarpukur, surrounded by extensive fields, looked like an island floating in a vast sea of green. Apart from agriculture, it was noted for cottage industries also. Sweet-meats like jilapi and nabat, hookah pipes of ebony, yarns, towels, cloth, etc., were prepared here and sent out for sale to Kolkata as well as to nearby markets.

Kamarpukur is a scenic village and has a special place as a natural attraction apart from the importance as a religious destination. The natural beauty and the calmness of this place attract thousands of seclusion seeking tourists to this place. There are many serene ponds suitable for undertaking water sports activities and water tourism.

The nearby village of Bhursubo is renowned as a place where a great personality named Manik Raja lived. The Mango grove and the Sukhasayer and Hatisayer tanks are his contributions to this place. The village still has the signs of ancient life styles, cultures and prosperity.

Jairambati: Birthplace of Sarada Devi and the spiritual consort of Sri Ramakrishna.

The village, surrounded on all sides by green pastures, untrimmed meadows, trees and shrubs, has a rural atmosphere. The area that extends for about half a mile between this village and the Amodar is very fertile and yields all kinds of vegetables and other agricultural products.
Saradadevi, revered incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi and spiritual life partner of the sage Sri Ramakrishna Pramamhamsa, was born in 1853 AD in this small hamlet. It is said that after the birth of Saradadevi, known as Holy Mother, the land became very fertile and showed prosperity. This place has grown to a revered holy destination for the pilgrims from all over the world. This village has many temples and historical houses in which Saradadevi spent her childhood and the rest of life.

The village is adorned with naturally charming environment and ambiance. The picturesque village is surrounded by lush green trees and shrubs, mesmerizing landscapes and meadows and has fantastic rural atmosphere. The region is known for fertile lands and the nearby rivulet Amodar is very attractive for the travelers. The agriculture is the main source of income in Jairambati.

The serene big lake known as “Mother Tank” in this village is a source of irrigation, bathing and other purposes. People use this lake for refreshing themselves. Banerji’s Tank, also called ‘Barunjjey Pukur’, is another water tank in this village. This tank is surrounded by eye catching palmyra trees. Present village offers great facilities for the visitors to this holy village.

Tarakeshwar:Known for Lord Shiva temple,”Tarakeshwar temple or Tarakeshwar”.

The principal attraction is the temple of Taraknath, an ‘atchala’ structure with a ‘natmandir’ in front. Close by are the shrines of Kali and Lakshmi-Narayan. Dudhpukur, a tank to the north of the Shiva temple is believed to fulfil the prayers of those taking a dip in it.
Pilgrims visit the temple throughout the year, especially on Mondays. But thousands of pilgrims visit Tarakeswar on the occasions of ‘Shivaratri’ and ‘Gajan’, the former taking place in Falgun (Feb-March) while the latter lasts for five days ending on the last day of Chaitra (mid-April). The month of Sravana (mid-July to mid-August) is auspicious for Shiva when celebrations are held on each Monday.
There is a Buddhist Temple just 6 km away from Tarakeswar. The name of the place is Deulpara. It is the only Buddha Temple in Hooghly District.

Mayapur:Birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
Mayapur located on the banks of the Ganges river, at the point of its confluence with the Jalangi, near Navadvip, West Bengal.Mayapur is the place where Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, considered as an incarnation of Lord Krishna, was born in 1486 AD. This is an important pilgrim center for the Gaudiya Vaishnaviites. The Mayapur atmosphere reverberates with the chanting of Hare Krishna and Hare Ram all through the days and the devotees dance and sing amazingly. Mayapur is thronged by thousands of devotees during the festival days of Holi (Dol Yatra), Janmashtami and other Vaishnava festivals.

There are many attractions in and around Mayapur. Chandrodaya Temple (first temple established by ISKON in Mayapur), Samadhi of Prabhupada (temple dedicated to the founder of ISKON), Shree Chaitanyamath (the birth place of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu), Goswami Maharaj Temple of Dashavatar and Chand Kazi’s Samadhi.

Navadvipa: Also known as Navadwip or Nabadwipdham.
Navadvipa named for being “9 islands” in the Bengali language. The islands are named Antardwip (Sri Mayapur), Simantadwip, Rudradwip, Madhyadwip, Godrumdwip, Ritudwip, Jahnudwip, Modadrumdwip, and Koladwip.
It was capital of Bengal during 12th century. Today it is renowned as the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is revered by the Hindu devotees. The town is ideally located at a picturesque place at the convergence of the Bhagirathi and Jalangi Rivers. ISKON consider this area as a holy place. The region witnesses many activities undertaken by ISKON. Navadvipa is also popular as Audarya Dhama. Audarya means generosity and magnanimity.

The most impressive religious and tourist attraction in Navadvipa is the Sonargouranga, the temple dedicated to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu enshrining a golden statue of Sri Chaitanya. The center location of the Navadvipa islands is known as Yogapitha. It is the holy place where Lord Chaitanya took birth in the Earth. The entire Navadvipa region is an aesthetic and spiritual location and it is believed that Sri Gauranga performed the transcendental activities at this place.

Vindhyachal: A Hindu pilgrimage
